Fool's Day |

April
Fool's Day falls on April 1. It is a day
of playing harmless practical jokes or
prank playing on friends, neighbours,
and relatives or sending some meaningless
messages to them for fun. April Fool's
Day is a "for-fun-only" observance.
The commonly accepted origin of April
fool's Day involves changes in the calendar.
At one time, the New Year celebration
began on March 25 and ended on April 1.
In 1582, King Charles
IX introduced the Gregorian calendar
and accepted the beginning of the New
Year as January 1. However, the communication
has not reached in many places and many
people did not receive the news for several
years. Others, the more obstinate crowd,
refused to accept the new calendar and
continued to celebrate the New Year on
April 1. The general populace labeled
these backward folk as "fools".
They were subject to some ridicule, and
were often sent on "fools errands"
or were made the butt of other practical
jokes. |
|
Those
who refused to acknowledge the new date
and those who disliked or did not hear
about the change were fair butts for those
wits who amused themselves by sending
mock presents and paying calls of pretended
ceremony on the 1st of April or simply
forgot received foolish
gifts and invitations to non existent
parties.
The beginning of this tradition was in
1582, in France, and the April fool is
called there is Poisson
d'avril (April fish) and in Scotland
a "gowk" or cuckoo. The custom
has been observed in many countries for
centuries. In India, similar tricks are
played at the Holi Festival ( Festival
of colours-on the day after the full moon
in every year in March) |
