Huygens Space Probe lands on TITAN

After a long travel of 3.5 billion KM, the Huygens Space Probe has landed on SATURN’S largest moon TITAN and began transmitting signals to earth stations. Huygens was launched in 1997 from Cape Carnaveral, Florida, USA, to study Saturn, its rings, its moons and its magnetosphere. Scientists hope that Huygens will be able to answer questions about how life began on earth.

TITAN’S atmosphere (the only moon in the solar system with an atmosphere) is mostly nitrogen like earth’s but its surface temperatures of about minus 292 F (minus 180 degree C) make it un hospitable to life. This project, Cassini- Huygens mission is a joint venture between NASA, the European Space Agency and Italy’s Space Program.
